AFROPUNK announces Battle of the Bands winners!

On Saturday, 30 November 2019, passionate music enthusiasts watched as the winner of the AFROPUNK Battle of the Bands was selected in Braamfontein. Currently in its third year, the South African leg of this competition usually only selects 1 winner. However this year, after a shocking turn of events 2 winners we crowned as the victors of this groundbreaking competition. Muney and Shameless are the two bands that will be sharing the stage with local and international acts at the AFROPUNK Joburg Festival on the 30 & ‪31 December‬ at the Constitution Hill.

It was not an easy win, the final four bands that participated at the competition were Rapsy, Muney, Shameless & Yanga Yaya, chosen by the public through a voting system from the ‪AFROPUNK website.

Not only will the winning bands perform at AFROPUNK but they will also receive an impressive distribution deal from the leading artist development hub in Africa, AFRICORI. Previous winners such as Stiff Pap, Ikati Esengxoweni & Red ‪Robyn‬ have been slowly progressing in their music careers since performing at the competition.

Included in the judging panel was AFROPUNK’s co-founder, Matthew Morgan, who said: “Every year, we get to witness amazing talent from young artists who are diverse and not afraid to express themselves freely in whatever form they feel like. The Battle Of The Bands platform has been a success in South Africa because of the multi cultural landscape which inspires raw and untamed talent which is what we witnessed tonight. Congratulations to all the finalists and we’re really excited to see their rise to stardom.”

In addition, AFROPUNK will be introducing the London Battle of the Bands 2019 winner to the South African market. Shoutout to SAMRO and Bos Ice Tea for supporting this year’s program.

AFROPUNK Joburg will take place at Constitution Hill on 30 & 31 December, under the theme WE SEE YOU, a message that unites AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it, under the banner of acknowledgment, and in resistance to those who strive to oppress. Get your tickets, we’ll see you there!
