Ever wonder about who comes up with those beautiful visuals on your favourite music channels?
One of the creative geniuses that designs them is Simphiwe Mangole. The 26 year old is the perfect example of how technology meets art. The Dundee born designer / illustrator relays how he has not always been decent at drawing but has been sketching his favourite Dragon Ball Z, Anime characters since he could hold a pencil. Adorbs!
Having studied at the University of Johannesburg to tone and master his craft, his parents never understood his career choice until recently and they have now found a new appreciation for his ventures.
One of Simphiwe’s greatest career highlights was when he landed a Castle campaign; this opportunity propelled him to new career heights and also secured big capital bags. He then bought himself an iPad Pro along with the Apple Pencil and the rest is history.
It’s mind blowing how his sketches still have the traditional look and feel of a pen but on an Ipad. He uses programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Procreate and other mobile apps. Can’t give away his whole recipe now… A yes to saving the environment too.
The “Maker of Things” goes on to say how technology has taken him out of the confinements of his office space to anywhere he wants to work. His page is full of afro-centric style and African personalities we are familiar with. He draws inspiration from, technology, photography, music and African culture. The creative keeps himself driven by manifesting ideas to reality through design, illustration and creation.
An all rounder too, he says his secret talent is making music on his iPad and believes ‘’there are a lot of parallels between music,art/design. I would even go as far to say that these are two sides of the same coin’.
