Afropunk 2019 Joburg: A Style Mecca | CARVE AFRICA

Afropunk is an annual arts festival that includes fashion, live music and film. It
originally debuted at the Academy of Music at Brooklyn in 2005 to celebrate art produced by black artists and has since expanded to other parts of the world.

The festival is all about colour, diversity, rhythm and multiracial and cultural uniqueness and South Africa is where these riches are at. Afropunk is a safe space where individuals are allowed to be their highest selves, to express their art however they choose including how they dress up. This annual festival was held at the Constitution Hill in Johannesburg on the 30th and 31st of December with a diverse mix of music from around the world.

Afro: a symbol of blackness, african, heritage, black hair, heritage, rhythm and colour.
Punk: symbol for loud, rebel, solid rock, unusual, rawness, curiosity and musical

  • I mean besides your inspiration being yourself putting these two together into fashion looks is mind blowing considering the styles we see at Afropunk Joburg every year without fail. Is it us or everybody spent 80% of their time staring at people because fashion heaven?! We still cannot comprehend our feelings about the spectacular looks every year! African fashion is EVERYTHING and we’re so here for it!

We compiled a video that showcases come of the amazing style looks of the festival. Check this
